The Truth About Spaying and Neutering
From an old school dog trainers perspective, I’ve always been on board with early spaying and neutering; not only because of overpopulation, but also to reduce the hormonal effect on behavior.
In the past few years, it’s being recommended more and more to wait longer before spaying and neutering. As the vets are recommending waiting longer, I began asking why. Even many breeders are requiring buyers to wait 1- 2 or more years before altering their dogs. What was happening to the 6 month guideline?
I learned a little about growth plates and cancer, but didn’t fully understand the association. I found a lot of conflicting and confusing information on the topic and was personally becoming conflicted as I realized dogs health may be suffering for the benefit of behavior and simplicity. I have been in pursuit of a better understanding of this change in attitude and got most of my questions answered in this very straight forward video. Dr. Becker does a great job of laying it all out while referencing supporting research.
If Dr. Becker can take accountability, admit she was wrong and change her thinking, I can at least keep an open mind and continue learning.
Warning not for the easily offended, she’s blunt and to the point, something I appreciate.
